Create a Personalized Tumbler Using Silhouette Cameo

Silhouette Cameo Project

I have a confession to make. I’m not crafty. I mean, I’m really not crafty. My mother-in-law is the crafty person in my family. But, I want to be more crafty because I homeschool and it would be much easier to make my own projects than to buy them. Which brings me to our new toy (that’s what my mother-in-law calls it).

I received a Silhouette Cameo for review and at first I was a little overwhelmed because I wasn’t quite sure what I could do with it. Then everyone I knew told me that I could make just about anything with it and that it was the best product to have. Okay, we’ll start with some really cool things that the Silhouette Cameo can do. It can cut paper and cardstock. adhesive vinyl, fabric, heat transfer material, and more!

What can you make with the Silhouette? Tons! Cards, custom apparel, vinyl decor, etched glass, sketch designs, temporary tattoos, paper crafts, and more. Wow! It’s crazy how much this one little machine can do. Going back to the fact that I’m lacking in the crafty department, lets go with what I made today. I’ve been wanting a personalized tumbler so I purchased my own clear tumbler with lime green (my favorite color) accents. I had some black adhesive vinyl to use and transfer paper to make life a little easier when putting it on the tumbler.

I downloaded the software that came with my Silhouette Cameo onto my computer. Using the software application, I typed in the words that I wanted to put on my tumbler.

I meaured out the amount of vinyl (using the grid on the software and measuring against my cutting mat). Then, attached to my adhesive cutting mat and followed the directions on my screen (i.e. blade size, roller length). Then clicked CUT and watched the magic. 😉

Once it cut the letters out, I pulled the vinyl off and it left the letters on the cutting mat. Taking the transfer paper, I cut it to the correct size to cover the letters on the cutting mat.

Then, peeled the backing off the transfer paper and laid it on top of the words. Carefully peeling it off the mat, you’ll see all the letters on the back of the transfer paper. All that needs to be done at this point is place it where you want the words to go.

I used a popsicle stick to rub the adhesive vinyl onto the tumbler before I pulled the transfer paper off the surface. I found that pulling it off at a diagonal instead of straight across worked better.

The Silhouette Cameo was very, very easy to use. Once I finally figured out what I wanted to make, the rest was a breeze. It’s the whole figuring out what to make next that stumps me.  I made my daughter some tiara stickers using adhesive foil. She loves them, so we’ll be making more this afternoon. My mother-in-law is asking to borrow the Cameo to make a quilt, so that may be the next project.

I’m proof that the Silhouette Cameo can make even the least crafty person, crafty. Now, I’m going to play and see what else I can make.
