Overnight French Toast Casserole

overnight french toast casserole

This is a recipe I make for our Christmas morning brunch.

I’ve tried overnight French Toast before and it never quite turned out right, but this one was a huge hit. My Mother-in-Law even asked for the recipe (that’s a good sign). I hope you enjoy it as much as we did.  I’ve noted the changes I made to the original underneath the recipe below.

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf Challah bread (or other crusty, buttery bread), 10 cups cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 8 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 2/3 cup half and half cream
  • 1 1/4 cups maple syrup
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 Tablespoons powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  2. Place cubed bread into greased 9 x 13 pan
  3. In a large bowl, beat cream cheese until smooth. Add eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each egg.
  4. Stir in milk, half and half, maple syrup, and vanilla until smooth. Pour mixture over bread, cover and refrigerate overnight.
  5. Remove pan from refrigerator 30 minutes prior to baking.
  6. Bake uncovered for 50 minutes, or until knife inserted in center comes out clean. Top with powdered sugar. Serve warm.

I add the entire 1 1/4 cups fo maple syrup into the mixture before pouring over the casserole and I prefer not to add any additional after baking. My family declares that it’s perfect!

I serve it with an egg breakfast casserole and a fruit salad.

This is a recipe I will be making this every Christmas, if not more often. It was so easy to make.

  1. This sounds great. I’ll have to write this down, see if I can find the bread or make it myself, and then give it a try. I love French toast.

  2. My family loves french toast, but it takes so long to make one or two slices at a time in a pan. I’ve never had a make-ahead overnight french toast souffle, but it sure sounds like something I’ll have to try. Thank you for sharing this!

BTW, it’s a great sign if the MIL asks for the recipe 🙂
