Homemade Vanilla Frosting
I’ve had this recipe in my index box for years, but I’ve never tried it. To be honest, I buy the canned frosting. I’ve never in my life made my own homemade vanilla frosting, until last night. Oh, I’m never going back to canned again! It was so easy to make and my family absolutely loved it!
The kids each added sprinkles to their cupcakes and I’m going out today to buy Valentine sprinkles so we can make even more cupcakes to give as gifts.
Now I’m thinking of all the variations I could make using this as a base frosting, adding food coloring or chocolate. Oh! I cannot wait. My daughter’s birthday is coming up next month and I’m going to think of something awesome to make using this frosting.
Ingredients
- 2 cups Powdered Sugar
- 1/2 cup Butter, at room temperature
- 1 tsp. vanilla extract
- 2 1/2 TBS. milk (add more if too sweet)
Instructions
- Add all ingredients in large bowl and mix until fluffy. Add additional milk by 1/2 TBS measure until it is to your liking. I ended up with 3 TBS of milk in my final batch.
If you want the frosting to be a little sweeter, I suggest not adding as much milk. Maybe start with 2 Tablespoons and see how you like it, just increase by 1/2 tablespoon increments until you get the taste that your family likes. Using 3 Tablespoons was perfect for us.
No butter on hand? No problem! Use a half-cup of Crisco shortening with 1 Tablespoon of water in place of butter in the recipe. I’ve tried it and it works like a charm.
Do you make your own homemade frosting? What do you use to make it special? I’d love to know!
