My husband and I have always been avid readers and we wanted to raise our children to share our love of books. Our kids are 2 and 4 and they cannot get enough to read. So far, I think we’ve done a great job teaching them letters, sounds and sight words. My oldest has been putting words together and is starting to read sentences so it is time for early learner books. We recently received a box in the mail from Usborne books and it included the Very First Reading Set of 15 books plus Parents’ Guide for review.
When speaking with Colleen, the Usborne independent consultant I am working with, it seemed that this set of books would be the perfect fit for my little ones.
The kids were so excited to get the books. Once I pulled them out of the box, we sat on the floor and started reading. My 4-year-old son couldn’t get enough and we read all 15 at one sitting. The first 7 books are written so that the parent reads one page and the child reads the next. I love this concept and I haven’t seen it in any of the children’s books we’ve read previously. I believe in shared reading because it helps the child become more confident as he reads and understands what he is reading.
There are three puzzles at the end of each book that test the child’s understanding of the book. The puzzles that my son liked the most were the picture puzzles asking what words matched with the pictures. It let’s me know what he understands and prompts him to ask me questions.
The Very First Reading Set actively develops the five skills that all children need to master in order to become fluent readers: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. Once the kids have finished this series I’m going to be looking at the First Reading series to keep their love for books growing.

Thanks for the review! As a teacher of 4 year olds at a local Preschool, I find that Usborne books are great and I am glad to find out about this series now!
