Homemade Cinnamon Applesauce

This past week we took an impromptu trip to North Carolina. I’ve never seen the leaves change colors, as I’m a native Floridian. We don’t actually have seasons down here.  😉

We stayed at a rustic little cabin on the side of a mountain in Highlands, NC. It was absolutely gorgeous and I’ll have a review up for the cabin shortly. Part of the charm was the apple trees, blueberry bushes, and hydrangea plants that were on the property.

Homemade Cinnamon Applesauce Recipe

Ingredients

  • 5 Cups Apples, peeled, cored, and diced
  • 1/4 Cup Sugar
  • 1 Tsp. Cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Add apples, sugar, and cinnamon to large pot on the stovetop.
  2. Cook on low to medium-low until the apples start to soften. Stir every 5 minutes or so for 20 minutes.
  3. Continue cooking on low until the apples start to break apart. Stir every 5 minutes or so for 10-15 minutes.
  4. Take off heat and mash until you reach desired consistency (chunky or smooth).

The kids had a blast picking apples off of the trees and I became a baking fool. Lots of new recipes coming soon! Homemade Cinnamon Applesauce was one of the first recipes I made after the apples started pouring in thanks to the kids running back and forth from the tree to the kitchen table.

This was my mother-in-law’s recipe, as we had limited internet access and couldn’t actually look up a recipe. Of course, all measurements were approximate because we didn’t have measuring cups or measuring spoons. The joys of rustic living.

It was fun to show the kids the apple trees, then the different parts of the apple, and finally let them eat all the hard work.
